PROJECT: Fools Fire: Exploring Umbras

A multimedia microfestival including musicians, projectionists, DJs. art
installations and more.

In June the Wandering Star Project stirs from a long, dream-laden slumber and finds itself in a curious and reflective mood. While pondering the realms of light and dark, the project will probe the forces that move within us-propelling us forward in our devotion to self-fulfillment and our tendency to self-destruction. The WSP invites a plethora of artist
friends and curious onlookers to join them as they glide and stumble their
way along the shadowline between blinding luminescence and obscurity
absolute.

PROJECT: Mixing Memory and Desire

Performed most recently on: Oct. 21, 22 & 26. 2005
This performance took place in the rear patio area of Caffe Driade, Chapel Hill NC. On display were 5 projection screens with a constant stream of photographs from self running projectors, as well as another projection screen for the live sequenced performance. DJ Mouse, Cab Caligari, and Projexorcism (along with other acts) came to support this event.

In their latest incarnation the Wandering Star Project explores the unique state of mind that exists between asleep and awake, the conscious and the unconscious. Using a ménage of vivid projections, live music and theatric elements the WSP presents a somnambulistic odyssey through a dreamscape where the sleeper incurs the familiar, the enigmatic and the unsettling mixture of the two.
These theatrical performances include photographic projection by Todd Jenkins, live electronic music and vocals composed specifically for this event by Lisa Furukawa Ray, and more. The show will take place in the rear patio area of Cafe Driade which is located off of Franklin St. in Chapel Hill, NC. On display will be an 18 foot projection screen with three running projectors feeding a constant stream of photographs.

Somewhere between
light and dark
asleep and awake
clarity and madness there are dreams.
To find them
close eyes
draw breath
cross fingers
go down
drift with those currents
familiar and terrifying -don't worry-
inspiration comes amidst the drowning.

Project: Coseekent

The Coseekent project has several movements and themes:

1. Life Awakening - "Flowers in the Rain"
2. Discovery and Growth - "Exploring Orbit"
3. Creation, Chaos, and Confusion - "Machines"
4. Searching for connectivity and value "Someone to Love"
5. Realization and truth - "Ikiru"

The piece presents itself on multiple levels.
In one sense it is a fairly simple story about the desire to love and to be loved, to experience something meaningful within a world that at times seems overwhelmingly chaotic, confusing and frightening. The more complete explanation begins on the scale of a single cell dividing into more complicated structures until there is a point of consciousness awakening and becoming aware of itself. This is a wondrous experience while it lasts but soon enough there arises the desire to seek out other forms of like consciousness. Desire intimates an emptiness, the sensation of lacking, much like hunger, which is at the heart of human experience. In attempting to communicate with or relate to other conscious entities one is certain to experience the friction- both pleasurable and painful- of human interaction. The character in our piece is overwhelmed by the consequences of these interactions and falls away in self defense from that which she desires most. In the end she rises once again to continue exploring herself and the world at large. While we witness considerable change and growth from her there is no verification of success in her search.
